Move Teams Channel to Another Team

Summary

You cannot move a Teams channel to another team natively, because its files and members belong to the parent team. Build a new channel, then move the files, rebuild tabs and members, and save the threads you need. Messages do not move by hand. A tool can keep authors and dates.

A channel grows too big, or a company reorganizes, and someone says, "Just move that channel to the other team." You open Teams, right-click the channel and look for Move. There is no Move.

I get this question from admins every month. The answer is short, but the reason behind it helps you plan the workaround. This guide explains why you cannot move Teams channel to another team, what you can copy by hand and where a tool is the safer choice.

Can you move Teams channel to another team?

No, not with a built in feature. A Microsoft moderator on Microsoft Q&A says Teams has no native feature to move a channel from one team to another. The reason, in their words, is that a channel's content and membership permissions are tied to its parent team's Microsoft 365 group.

So you do not move the channel. You build a new one in the target team and bring over what you can. Some parts travel well. Messages do not.

Why does a channel stay tied to its team?

Because a channel is not a container of its own. It is a view on things that belong to the team. Microsoft explains the file side clearly. Creating a team creates a parent SharePoint site connected to the team's Microsoft 365 group. Every standard channel shares that site, and the Files tab of a channel is only a folder in its default document library.

Members work the same way. The group holds membership in Microsoft Entra ID and gives those people access to the site. A channel has no separate list of people unless it is private or shared. That is why you cannot move Teams channel to another team with one click. There is nothing to lift out and set down.

What a Teams channel depends on in its parent team A standard channel has no storage of its own. Its files are a folder in the parent team's SharePoint site, its members come from the team's Microsoft 365 group, its tabs and apps are set up in the channel and its messages stay with the parent team. One channel in Team A Looks like a separate space Is a view on the team Files A folder in the team's SharePoint site Members Come from the team's Microsoft 365 group Tabs and apps Set up inside the channel, rebuilt by hand Messages Stay with the team and cannot move
A standard channel has no storage or member list of its own, so there is nothing to detach.

When a team owner asks me to move a channel, I ask one question first. Do you need the files, or do you need the conversations? The answer decides the entire plan.

How do you move Teams channel to another team by hand?

Treat it as a copy and a clean up. This is the order I use to move Teams channel to another team. Steps 1 and 2 are planning. Steps 3 to 7 rebuild the channel. Step 8 closes the old one.

  1. List what the channel holds. Write down the files, tabs, apps, members and the threads people still need. This is your move list.
  2. Check the channel type. A private or shared channel has its own SharePoint site and its own members. It needs separate handling from a standard channel.
  3. Create the new channel. Open the target team, add a channel with the same name and settings, and set who can post.
  4. Move the files. Use Move to or Copy to from the Files tab to send folders into the new channel. Test one folder first.
  5. Rebuild tabs and apps. Add the same tabs, like Planner or OneNote, to the new channel by hand and check that they open.
  6. Add members and owners. Re-add the people who work in the channel and check that guests still have access.
  7. Save the conversations you need. Messages do not move. Export or save the threads that matter and tell people where they went.
  8. Retire the old channel. Announce a date, mark the old channel as archived, stop new posts and delete it only after a retention period.

Step 8 is where people rush. Keep the old channel read only for a few weeks, because someone always needs one message you forgot to save.

What can you move by hand and what stays behind?

Here is the short answer for every part of a channel.

Part of the channelBy handWhat to do
FilesYesUse Move to or Copy to. Test version history on one file first
Tabs and appsRebuildAdd them again and set them up
Members and ownersRebuildAdd them again in the target team
Messages and repliesNoSave the threads you need before you retire the channel
Private channelSeparateIt has its own SharePoint site, so plan it on its own
Shared channelSeparateIt has its own site and outside participants, so plan it on its own

How do you move channel files to another team?

The files are the one part Microsoft lets you move yourself. Microsoft's steps are short.

  1. Open the channel's Files tab, or find the channel under Quick access in OneDrive.
  2. Hover over the file or folder and select More options.
  3. Choose Move to or Copy to.
  4. Select the destination folder in the new channel.
  5. Select Move here.

Microsoft's page does not say whether version history, permissions or metadata come along, so open a moved file and check before you move the rest. If you only need a file in two channels, share a link and do not copy it. For a big channel, Move to in the browser has limits, and I cover them in how to migrate OneDrive to SharePoint.

Can Create a team from an existing team help?

It helps with the shape, not the content. Microsoft lets you create a team From another team and choose to copy channels, tabs, settings, apps and members. That gives you the same channel layout in a new team without rebuilding it by hand.

The catch is what Microsoft does not list. Its page does not mention messages or files, so plan to move the files yourself and treat the old messages as left behind. It also creates a new team and does not add a channel to a team you already have.

What about private and shared channels?

Every private or shared channel gets its own SharePoint site. Its Files tab connects to that site, and only channel members can open it. Shared channels also let in people from outside the team.

That means a manual move has more to check. Site permissions, membership and sharing settings all differ from a standard channel. Plan a private or shared channel on its own, and do not assume the steps above cover it.

What happens to the messages?

They stay. Microsoft gives you no way to move channel messages from one team to another, and a hand copy loses authors, dates, reactions and replies. Pasting old threads into a new channel makes every message look like it came from you today.

You have three honest choices. Save the threads you need as a record and link to them. Leave the old channel read only as an archive. Or use a tool that recreates messages with their authors and dates, which I cover in what does not migrate in a Microsoft Teams migration.

Which way to move a Teams channel to another team For a few files with no chat history, copy the files by hand. For the same channels, tabs and members in a new team, create a team from an existing team. When threads must keep authors and dates, use a migration tool. When the move crosses tenants, plan a tenant migration. What do you need? Use this way A few files, no chat history Copy the files by hand Same channels, tabs, members Create a team from an existing team Threads keep authors, dates A migration tool The move crosses tenants A tenant migration plan
Start at the top and go down only when the row above is not enough.

If the move crosses tenants, read my guide on how to migrate Microsoft Teams to another tenant first. If files sit on a team site you plan to move as well, how to migrate a SharePoint site to another tenant covers that side.

Need messages to keep their authors and dates

RecoveryTools Teams Migrator copies single channels between Microsoft 365 accounts, with authors, dates, reactions, mentions, files, tabs and members. Create the destination team and channel first. Chats are saved to disk and do not write back, and guests do not move. A finished channel import cannot be undone, so test one channel first.

The trial unlocks every option and caps volume at 25 items per channel. Works on Windows 11, 10 and Windows Server.

Which mistakes hurt a channel move?

Five mistakes show up again and again when people try to move Teams channel to another team.

First, deleting the old channel before anyone checks the new one. Second, copying files without testing version history on one file. Third, forgetting tabs and apps, so the Planner board is gone. Fourth, pasting old messages into the new channel and losing every author and date. Fifth, treating a private or shared channel like a standard one.

My verdict on moving a Teams channel

To move Teams channel to another team, plan a rebuild, because there is no move button. Move the files, rebuild the tabs and members, save the threads and keep the old channel read only for a while.

If the conversations matter as much as the files, do not paste them by hand. A migration tool is the safer way to keep authors and dates. If they do not matter, a clean new channel is often the better start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a Teams channel to another team?

Not natively. Teams has no feature to move a channel, because its files and members belong to the parent team's SharePoint site and Microsoft 365 group. You create a new channel and bring content over.

How do I move channel files to another team?

Open the Files tab, select More options on a file or folder, choose Move to or Copy to, select the destination folder in the new channel and select Move here. Test one file first.

Do channel messages move to the new team?

No. Microsoft gives no way to move channel messages between teams. Save the threads you need, keep the old channel read only or use a tool that recreates messages with authors and dates.

Does Create a team from an existing team copy a channel?

It copies channels, tabs, settings, apps and members into a new team. Microsoft's page does not mention messages or files. It creates a new team and does not add a channel to an existing one.

Can I move a private channel to another team?

Not natively. A private channel has its own SharePoint site and its own members, so plan it on its own and check site permissions and sharing settings after the rebuild.

Is there a tool to move a Teams channel to another team?

Yes. A migration tool can copy a single channel to another team with authors, dates, files and members. Create the destination first, test one channel and check what stays behind, like guests and chats.
