You can migrate OneDrive to SharePoint with Move to, Copy to, File Explorer or PnP PowerShell. Microsoft limits a move across sites to 100 GB and 30,000 files per operation. Move keeps version history and Copy does not. Files take the permissions of the new library.
An employee leaves, or a team finishes a project, and years of work sit in one person's OneDrive. I get asked the same question every time. How do we move it to a SharePoint library before it disappears or gets lost in a private folder?
Microsoft gives you simple tools for a small move and no single tool for a big one. This guide shows five ways to migrate OneDrive to SharePoint, the limits Microsoft sets and what changes when files land in the new library.
Why migrate OneDrive to SharePoint?
OneDrive belongs to one person. SharePoint belongs to a site. That one difference drives almost every reason to move.
When a person leaves, their OneDrive is on a deletion clock, as I explain in what happens to OneDrive files when an employee leaves. A SharePoint library has no such clock. Teams also want shared ownership, co-authoring, columns for metadata and retention rules that cover the entire library.
Do not move a leaver's files in a hurry on their last day. Decide the target library first, then move in small batches and check every batch.

How do you migrate OneDrive to SharePoint step by step?
This order fits every method below. Steps 1 to 4 prepare the move. Steps 5 to 8 do it and prove it.
- Choose the target library. Choose the site and library first, so the files land where their new owners will find them. Create a folder for the move if the library is busy.
- Check your access. You need access to the source OneDrive and permission to add files to the library. For a leaver, you may need to gain access to their OneDrive as an admin.
- Clean names and paths. SharePoint blocks some characters in names, and full paths are limited to 400 characters. Shorten deep folders now and not after a failed move.
- Check the size. Microsoft limits a move or copy across sites to 100 GB and 30,000 files in one operation. Split bigger sets into batches.
- Choose a method. Use the table in this guide. A small folder can use Move to. A large set needs File Explorer or PowerShell.
- Move one test folder. Open a few files in the new library. Check names, versions and who can see them.
- Move the rest in batches. Keep every batch under the limits and note what you moved, so a failed batch is easy to repeat.
- Check counts and permissions. Compare file counts on both sides, test access as a normal user, then retire the source folder.
People skip step 6 because the move looks simple. It is the cheapest insurance in the list.
Which method should you use to migrate OneDrive to SharePoint?
Choose by size and by how much history you must keep. Microsoft has no bulk tool for this exact move, so these are the ways that work.
| Method | Best for | Version history | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move to in the browser | Small and medium folders | Moves with the file | Cross-site moves can be switched off |
| Copy to in the browser | Keeping the original in place | Latest version only | 500 MB at a time in the portal |
| File Explorer with synced libraries | Large folders | Test first | Needs both libraries synced to the PC |
| PnP PowerShell | Many folders in a repeatable job | Test first | Needs scripting skill and an app registration |
| Second tenant involved | A move to a new tenant as well | Depends on the tool | Plan the tenant move first |
How do you use Move to to migrate OneDrive to SharePoint?
This is the cleanest option, because the files move in the cloud and your PC is not involved. Microsoft's steps are short.
- Open OneDrive in your browser and select the files or folders.
- Select Move to on the command bar.
- Choose a destination. Sites you use appear under Quick Access, and you can pin a site to Quick Access if it is missing.
- Open the target library and select Move here.
If no other sites appear in the list, your organization does not allow moving across sites. A SharePoint or Global Administrator can allow it through the Allow or prevent custom script setting in the SharePoint admin center, according to Microsoft.
Moves keep version history, with one trap. If the destination library has a lower version limit, Microsoft shows a warning that versions could be lost, and lets you move anyway. Read that warning. Also note that only properties the destination supports are kept, so data in a column that the library does not have is lost.
When is Copy to the better choice?
Use Copy to when the files must stay in OneDrive as well, for example while a team checks the new library. The steps match Move to. Select the files, choose Copy to, select the library and select Copy here.
The catch is version history. Copy to takes only the latest version. To keep older versions you would have to restore and copy them one by one. Microsoft also says to use the portal for up to 500 MB at a time and File Explorer for more. For a leaver whose files matter, I move and do not copy.
Can File Explorer migrate OneDrive to SharePoint?
Yes, and Microsoft points to it for large transfers. Sync the source folder and the target library to your PC with the OneDrive sync app, then drag the folders from one to the other. The sync app uploads them for you.
It works well for big folders because it does not time out in a browser. The limits are real, though. Both libraries must fit on your disk, and a drag and drop is closer to a copy than a move. Test one folder and check version history before you move the rest.
Can PowerShell migrate OneDrive to SharePoint in bulk?
It can. PnP PowerShell copies files and folders across sites in the same tenant, and it can handle many folders in one job. Sign in to the source OneDrive, then copy a folder to the target library.
Connect-PnPOnline -Url https://contoso-my.sharepoint.com/personal/jane_contoso_com -Interactive -ClientId <your-app-id>
Copy-PnPFile -SourceUrl "/personal/jane_contoso_com/Documents/Projects" -TargetUrl "/sites/Marketing/Shared Documents" -Force
Recent versions of PnP PowerShell need an Entra app registration of your own. Check the exact URL format in the PnP documentation and test one folder first. A script has no resume of its own, so log what you copied, or a restart can create duplicates.
What changes when files move from OneDrive to SharePoint?
The files arrive, and some of their surroundings do not. This is the check list I use after every move.
| Item | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Permissions | Files take the permissions of the library | Check access as a normal user |
| Sharing links | Old links may stop working | Test one and share again from SharePoint |
| Version history | Move keeps it, Copy does not | Choose Move for files that matter |
| Properties | Only what the library supports is kept | Add the needed columns before the move |
| File names | Blocked characters and long paths fail | Rename and shorten before you start |
| Storage | Files now count against the tenant SharePoint pool | Check free space first |
Storage matters more than people expect, and I explain the pool in SharePoint storage limit explained. For columns and metadata, my guide on how to migrate SharePoint document libraries with metadata shows what to set up first.
Moving to a new tenant as well
If the files must also change tenant, split the job in two. RecoveryTools OneDrive Migrator copies OneDrive accounts between tenants, with folders and version history. RecoveryTools SharePoint Migrator copies document libraries between two Microsoft 365 accounts. Neither moves a OneDrive straight into a library, so finish the tenant move first and then use Move to on the new side.
No credit card, no sign-up. Works on Windows 11, 10 and Windows Server 2022.
For the tenant side of the job, my guide on how to migrate OneDrive from one tenant to another covers the move, and how to transfer OneDrive files to another user covers the case where a person, not a library, should own the files.
Which mistakes break a OneDrive to SharePoint move?
Five mistakes show up again and again.
First, moving a huge folder in one go and hitting the 100 GB or 30,000 file limit. Second, using Copy to for files whose history matters. Third, ignoring the version limit warning. Fourth, not checking permissions, so private files end up open to the entire site. Fifth, deleting the source before the counts match.
My verdict on moving OneDrive files to SharePoint
For a few folders, use Move to and read every warning. For a large set, use File Explorer or PowerShell in batches. For files that must also change tenant, finish that move first.
Choose the target library before you touch a file, test one folder and compare counts at the end. That order prevents almost every problem I see.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move files from OneDrive to SharePoint without downloading them?
Yes. Move to and Copy to in the OneDrive browser move files in the cloud, so nothing downloads to your PC. For large sets, File Explorer with synced libraries is the other common route.
Does Move to keep version history when I migrate OneDrive to SharePoint?
Move to keeps version history, but Microsoft warns you if the destination library has a lower version limit. Copy to takes only the latest version, so choose Move for files that matter.
What is the limit for moving files across sites?
Microsoft's service description limits a move or copy across sites to 100 GB and 30,000 files in one operation. The browser Copy to help page also says to use the portal for up to 500 MB at a time.
Why does Move to not show my SharePoint site?
Your organization may not allow moving across sites. A SharePoint or Global Administrator can allow it through the Allow or prevent custom script setting. You can also pin the site to Quick Access.
Do permissions move with the files?
No. Files take the permissions of the destination library, according to a Microsoft Q&A answer. Check access as a normal user and share again where needed.
Can I move an entire OneDrive account to SharePoint?
Yes, in batches. Move folders in groups that stay under 100 GB and 30,000 files, and check counts after every group. For a leaver, you need admin access to their OneDrive first.
