Microsoft 365 migration rollback depends on the workload, so you plan it before cutover and not after. Learn what Microsoft says about mailbox moves and deleted sites, which data stays safe in the source and follow 6 steps to decide fast.
Cutover is done, and the new tenant has a problem. Mail routes wrong, a team is empty or users cannot sign in.
I plan every Microsoft 365 migration rollback before the first user moves. Here you see what you can undo, what you cannot and how to decide in time, using Microsoft's own pages.
Is Microsoft 365 Migration Rollback Possible?
Microsoft 365 migration rollback works for copy based moves and not for mailbox moves between tenants. A copy leaves the source as it was, so rollback means you keep using the source. A mailbox move changes the source.
Microsoft's page on cross tenant mailbox migration says the source mailbox is deleted after a successful migration. Microsoft adds that under no circumstances is the source mailbox available, discoverable or accessible in the source tenant.
What Happens to the Source Mailbox After a Move?
Microsoft says the source user mailbox converts to a MailUser. The MailUser holds the routing address to the destination tenant and forwards incoming mail.
Keep the MailUser until your business process allows removal. Microsoft says every migrated mailbox needs the source MailUser with the correct target address to forward mail.
One safety step comes from Microsoft too. If you need a copy of the source mailbox in the source tenant, an admin can copy the contents to an alternate mailbox before the move.
Can You Move a Mailbox Back to the Source Tenant?
A mailbox that must return to the original tenant needs the same steps and scripts in both tenants, with some variance, according to Microsoft. You update the existing organization relationship and do not create a new one.
Mailbox rollback is a second project, not an undo button. Plan the return path only for mailboxes where a failed move would stop the business.
For the full mailbox route, read Exchange Online mailbox migration between tenants.
How Long can You Restore Deleted SharePoint Sites?
Microsoft's page on restoring deleted sites says deleted sites stay for 93 days. After that, the site and its content are permanently deleted.
Sites that belong to a Microsoft 365 group differ. Microsoft says restoring the site restores the group, and the other group resources stay for only 30 days.
Microsoft's page on SharePoint data deletion adds 14 more days of backups after deletion, and only Microsoft support can use them for a point in time restore.
| Workload | What Microsoft says | What rollback means |
|---|---|---|
| Mailbox moved between tenants | Source mailbox is deleted after success and a MailUser stays | Move back with the same steps in both tenants |
| Deleted SharePoint site | Kept 93 days | Restore from Deleted sites in the admin center |
| Site in a Microsoft 365 group | Group resources kept 30 days | Restore the site to restore the group |
| Copy based move | Source stays as it was | Keep users on the source |
How do You Plan a Microsoft 365 Migration Rollback?
I follow six steps for every Microsoft 365 migration rollback plan.
- Set a go or no go point. Write the checks that must pass before you cut users over and name the person who decides.
- Keep the source untouched. Do not delete, rename or unlicense source accounts until verification ends.
- Copy what must survive. For mailboxes you cannot lose, copy the contents to an alternate mailbox before the move, as Microsoft advises.
- Record the source state. List every user, address, site and team with its owner so you can compare after cutover.
- Start with a pilot batch. For mailboxes, Microsoft recommends submitting batches two weeks before the cutover date, because users see no impact during synchronization.
- Decide and act. If checks fail, stop new moves, keep users on the source, fix the cause and start another delta pass.
For the checks that come before cutover, read Microsoft 365 migration planning checklist.
How does a Copy Based Tool Change Your Migration Rollback?
RecoveryTools OneDrive Migrator treats the source as read only, never overwrites existing files and retries only failed items. A failed copy leaves the source account as it was, so rollback needs no undo. You fix the cause and retry.
Sharing links, Personal Vault and retention and legal holds stay behind in OneDrive, so plan those as rebuild work in the new tenant.
Keep the Source Untouched While You Copy OneDrive
RecoveryTools OneDrive Migrator copies OneDrive for Business between tenants and keeps the source read only. Test one account first, check the result and then move the rest.
Works on Windows 11, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2022.
For OneDrive routes, read OneDrive cross tenant license. For Teams, read how to migrate Microsoft Teams to another tenant.
What are the Best Practices for Migration Rollback?
- Decide early. Agree the rollback checks and the go or no go call before cutover week.
- Protect the source. Source data is your rollback path, so leave it alone.
- Keep the MailUser. Mail routing depends on it until you remove it on purpose.
- Test with a pilot. A small batch shows the problem before it reaches everyone.
- Mind the day counts. Deleted sites stay 93 days and group resources only 30.
Which Mistakes Make Rollback Impossible?
Teams repeat four errors. They delete source accounts the day cutover ends, and they remove the MailUser before mail routing settles. They also skip the pilot batch, and they plan rollback after the first failure.
My Verdict on Migration Rollback
Microsoft 365 migration rollback is a plan, not a button. Copy based moves give you a safe source, and mailbox moves need their own return path.
Set your checks, protect the source and keep deleted data inside Microsoft's day limits. Then a bad cutover stays a small problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Microsoft 365 Migration Rollback Possible?
Rollback depends on the workload. A copy leaves the source as it was, so you keep using it, while a mailbox move deletes the source mailbox after success.
Can You Move a Mailbox Back to the Source Tenant?
Yes. Microsoft says you repeat the same steps and scripts in both tenants, with some variance, and update the existing organization relationship.
What Happens to the Source Mailbox After a Cross Tenant Move?
Microsoft says the source mailbox is deleted and a MailUser stays in the source tenant. The MailUser forwards incoming mail to the destination tenant.
How Long can You Restore a Deleted SharePoint Site?
Deleted sites stay for 93 days according to Microsoft. Group resources behind a Microsoft 365 group site stay for 30 days.
When should You Decide on Rollback?
Decide on rollback before cutover. Write the checks that must pass and name who calls a no go, so nobody debates it at midnight.
Does RecoveryTools Change the Source Tenant?
The OneDrive Migrator and Teams Migrator pages say the source is read only. Both copy data to the destination and leave the source as it was.
What should You Keep Until Verification Ends?
Keep every source account, mailbox and site, plus the MailUser that routes mail. Delete nothing until your checks pass and users confirm their data.
Published 20 October 2026. Mailbox move details come from Microsoft's page on cross tenant mailbox migration. Site restore details come from Microsoft's pages on restoring deleted sites and SharePoint data deletion. Product behavior comes from the RecoveryTools OneDrive Migrator and Teams Migrator pages. Microsoft can change these limits, so check them before you plan.
