A SharePoint 404 after migration usually means the link is old, not that the file is gone. Common causes are a changed host name, a skipped file or a deleted redirect. Check the URL first, then the migration report, then the Recycle bin. After that, replace old links. Microsoft keeps deleted items for 93 days.
Cutover was clean. Then a user sends a screenshot with the words 404 FILE NOT FOUND and asks if the migration lost their work. Nine times out of ten, the file is sitting in the new site and the link is the problem.
I get this ticket after almost every SharePoint move. This guide shows why you see a SharePoint 404 file not found error after migration, how to find the cause in six steps and how to fix old links using facts from Microsoft's own pages.
Why do You See a SharePoint 404 After Migration?
A 404 means SharePoint cannot find anything at that address. After a migration, the address is the usual suspect. A copy based move lands files in a site with a new URL, often under a new tenant host name. Any link, bookmark or favorite that still holds the old address has nothing left to open.
Microsoft's page on managing site redirects explains why some old links still work. SharePoint creates a redirect at the old URL when you change a site address, move a site to another geo location or swap a site. A tenant to tenant copy is not on that list.
In my experience, three other causes show up too. The file was skipped during the copy. Someone deleted the file or the old redirect. Or the home page of the new site is missing. I cover each one below.
Which Cause Fits What You See?
Match your symptom to a cause before you change anything.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Old link shows 404 | Link points at the source tenant address | Open the file in the new site and share a fresh link |
| Bookmarks stopped working | No redirect exists for a tenant copy | Update bookmarks and favorites |
| One file missing in the library | File was skipped or failed in the copy | Check the per-item migration report |
| File was there last week | Someone deleted it | Restore it from the Recycle bin within 93 days |
| Link inside a document breaks | Links in files are not rewritten | Edit the link in the document |
| Old site address worked then stopped | Redirect was deleted | Check redirects with your admin |
How do You Fix a SharePoint 404 File Not Found Error After Migration?
Work through these steps in order. They go from the quickest check to the deepest one.
- Read the address. Look at the host name and the path in the browser. If the host is the old tenant, the link is old. Open the site in the new tenant and find the file there.
- Look for the file in the new library. Open the document library and search for the file name. If it is there, copy a new link from the file and send that one.
- Check the migration report. Find the file in the per-item report and read its status. A skipped or failed item never reached the new site, so copy it again.
- Check the Recycle bin. Select Recycle bin in the left pane. Microsoft keeps deleted items for 93 days. If the item is not in the first stage, open the second-stage recycle bin at the bottom of the page and select Restore.
- Check access. Ask the user to open the file from a direct link. If it fails for them and works for you, compare permissions and user mapping.
- Replace the old links. Update bookmarks, favorites, web part links and links inside documents. Share fresh links for files that matter.
Microsoft's page on restoring deleted items from the site collection recycle bin says site collection admins and site owners can restore items from the second stage. It also says the second stage has space equal to 200 percent of the site collection quota, and the oldest items are purged first when it fills up.
What Happens to Old Links After a SharePoint Move?
It depends on the route. Microsoft's page on changing a site address says SharePoint creates a redirect at the previous address and that sharing links redirect to the new URL. It also says embedded URLs in web parts, like News and List, are not updated and may break.
Microsoft's page on site redirects adds one warning. Once a redirect is deleted, requests to the old URL are not redirected. Bookmarks, links and Shared With Me references stop working, and browsing to the old URL returns a 404 error. Ask your admin before anyone deletes a redirect to reuse an address.
Links inside documents are a separate problem. A Microsoft Q&A answer on links lost after a migration says the SharePoint Migration Tool does not rewrite links inside documents. Treat this as a Q&A answer, not official documentation, and plan to fix those links by hand.

How does a Migration Tool Help With SharePoint 404 Errors?
A tool cannot keep old links alive across tenants. What it does is give you proof of what arrived, so you can tell a skipped file from a stale link in minutes.
RecoveryTools SharePoint Migrator writes an HTML report, a CSV and a text log with a status for every item. It rebuilds the quick launch and the top link bar against the new URLs. Links that point at the old address do not follow the content, so you update them after cutover. For the full move, read how to migrate a SharePoint site to another tenant.
Prove What Landed Before Users Report a 404
RecoveryTools SharePoint Migrator moves sites, libraries and lists between two Microsoft 365 accounts and writes a per-item report. Check the report against your source counts, and test one library before the full batch.
No credit card, no sign-up. Works on Windows 11, 10 and Windows Server.
What are the Best Practices to Avoid SharePoint 404 Errors?
- List the links that matter before cutover. Client links and linked spreadsheets cause most tickets.
- Send the new addresses first. Give users the new site URLs on cutover day.
- Keep the source read-only. Users can still reach old files while links are fixed.
- Save the migration report. It settles every missing file question quickly.
- Check redirects before you delete one. A deleted redirect makes old links return 404 errors.
Which Mistakes Make a Link Problem Look Like Data Loss?
Four come up often. First, assuming the file is lost before reading the URL. Second, copying the file again without checking the report. Third, deleting a redirect to free up an address. Fourth, forgetting the links inside spreadsheets and other documents.
My Verdict on SharePoint 404 Errors After Migration
The file is usually safe. Check the address, then the report, then the Recycle bin.
Then fix the links. Share new ones, update bookmarks and edit the links inside documents that people still use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I Get a SharePoint 404 File Not Found Error After Migration?
The link usually points at the old tenant address. The file may also have been skipped, deleted or moved. Check the host name first, then the migration report and the Recycle bin.
Does SharePoint Redirect Old URLs After a Tenant Migration?
Microsoft lists three cases that create redirects: changing a site address, moving a site to another geo location and swapping a site. A tenant to tenant copy is not one of them, so plan to replace old links.
How Long can I Restore a Deleted SharePoint File?
Microsoft says deleted items are kept for 93 days. They sit in the site Recycle bin first, then move to the second-stage recycle bin for the rest of that period.
Do Sharing Links Redirect After a Site Address Change?
Yes. Microsoft says sharing links redirect to the new URL after a site address change. That page covers address changes, not copies between tenants.
Why do Links Inside Documents Break After Migration?
A Microsoft Q&A answer says the SharePoint Migration Tool does not rewrite links inside documents. SharePoint Online URLs differ from the old paths, so you edit those links yourself.
What Happens When You Delete a SharePoint Redirect?
Microsoft says requests to the old URL are no longer redirected. Bookmarks and links stop working, and the old address returns a 404 error.
Does RecoveryTools SharePoint Migrator Fix Old Links?
No. Links that point at the old address do not follow the content. It writes a per-item report so you can tell skipped files from stale links, and it rebuilds navigation against the new URLs.
