Remove SharePoint Shortcut from OneDrive

Summary

A SharePoint shortcut in OneDrive is only a link, so removing it never deletes the files. Open OneDrive on the web, go to My files and choose Remove on the folder with the link icon. If it sticks, pause sync and delete the local folder. Admins can switch the command off.

A user sends me this message more than any other. "I added a SharePoint folder to my OneDrive by mistake. How do I get rid of it without deleting the files?" The fear is fair. The folder looks real, it sits next to personal files and the Delete key is right there.

Good news first. A SharePoint shortcut is only a link. This guide shows how to remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive on the web and on your PC, why a shortcut sometimes will not go away and how admins can stop users adding more.

What happens when you remove a SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive?

You remove the link and nothing else. A shortcut is an entry in My files that points to a folder in a SharePoint library. It has a small link icon so you can tell it apart from a normal folder. The real files stay in SharePoint, and everyone else keeps their access.

Microsoft's own answer describes it as removing a hyperlink. The shortcut also takes up no space in your OneDrive, because the files count against the SharePoint site.

Removing the shortcut deletes only the link and the files stay. Deleting files inside the shortcut deletes them from SharePoint for everyone. Before you press Delete on a shortcut, read the prompt. If it lists files, stop and use the web method instead. A link should never ask to delete thousands of files.

How do you remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive step by step?

Use this order to remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive. It starts with a check, so you never touch real files by mistake.

  1. Find the shortcut. Look for a folder with a small link icon in My files. A normal folder has no icon.
  2. Check it is a shortcut. Hover over it or open Details. If the folder holds your own files and has no link icon, it is not a shortcut. Do not remove it.
  3. Open OneDrive on the web. Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account, open OneDrive and select My files.
  4. Select the shortcut. Right-click the folder, or select the three dots next to it.
  5. Choose Remove. Choose Remove, not Delete, so the action names the link and not the files.
  6. Check your PC. If you sync OneDrive, the folder should leave File Explorer within a few minutes. If it stays, use the File Explorer method below.
  7. Check the SharePoint library. Open the site and confirm the folder and files are still there.
  8. Add it again if you changed your mind. Open the library in SharePoint and select Add shortcut to My files.

Step 7 takes ten seconds and ends the worry. The files were never in your OneDrive, so they cannot leave with the link.

How do you remove a SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive on the web?

The web is the safest place to remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive, because the menu says Remove in plain words. Open OneDrive in a browser, select My files, find the folder with the link icon and use the three dots menu. Select Remove.

Microsoft lists this as a supported way to remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive. If you cannot find the Remove option, check that you still have access to the library. A shortcut to a site you lost access to can behave oddly until you or an admin fix the access.

How do you remove it in File Explorer?

Open your OneDrive folder on the PC and find the folder with the small link icon. Right-click it and choose Delete. Some versions show Remove shortcut instead. Microsoft's troubleshooting steps use Delete for a shortcut folder, and the files stay in SharePoint.

Take one precaution. If a prompt asks you to confirm deleting a long list of files, cancel it. One user reported that prompt on a stuck shortcut, and clicking Yes could remove shared content. Use the web method or pause sync first.

Why will the SharePoint shortcut not go away?

Three causes cover most cases. Every one has a different fix.

Three reasons a SharePoint shortcut will not leave OneDrive and the fix for every one A sync mismatch means you removed it on the web but File Explorer still shows it, so pause sync and delete the local folder. Lost access means you can no longer open the library, so remove it on the web or ask for access. A library that is both synced and added as a shortcut is not allowed, so choose one. Sync mismatch gone on web, still on PC Fix Pause sync Delete the local folder, then resume Lost access library will not open Fix Remove it on the web or ask the site owner to restore access Sync and shortcut both on one library Fix Choose one Remove the shortcut or stop the sync
Most stuck shortcuts fit one of these three cases.

The first is a sync mismatch. You removed the shortcut on the web, but File Explorer still shows the old folder. Pause syncing in the OneDrive app, delete the local folder and resume. Microsoft gives this same tip: if you cannot remove the shortcut either way, pause sync and try again.

The second is lost access. If someone removed you from the site, the shortcut can fail to open and to remove. Use the web method, or ask the site owner to restore your access first.

The third is by design. Microsoft says you cannot sync a document library that is already a shortcut in OneDrive, and you cannot add a shortcut to a library you already sync. The error reads, "You're already syncing a shortcut to a folder from this shared library." Remove the shortcut or stop the sync.

Should you use a shortcut or sync a SharePoint library?

Before you add the next one, decide what you need. They do different jobs.

OptionWhat it doesGood forThe catch
Add shortcut to My filesShows the folder in OneDrive with a link iconQuick access from the web and mobile appNeeds access to stay. It can fill a PC if you also sync it
SyncCopies the library to your PC and keeps it updatedWorking offlineUses disk space and cannot be combined with a shortcut
Open in the browserNo link, no copyFiles you rarely touchYou need to find the site every time

How can an admin stop users adding shortcuts?

An admin can switch off the Add shortcut to OneDrive command for the entire tenant. Connect to the SharePoint Online Management Shell and set one parameter.

Connect-SPOService -Url https://contoso-admin.sharepoint.com
Set-SPOTenant -DisableAddShortCutsToOneDrive $True

This applies to every site, because there is no per site switch. It also does not remove shortcuts that users already added. They stay in My files until every user removes them. Check the parameter in the current SharePoint Online Management Shell documentation before you use it in production, and tell users what changed.

What happens to shortcuts after a site rename or a migration?

They break. A shortcut stores the address of the folder it points to. If the site is renamed, moved or migrated to another tenant, the link may point at nothing. I cover the rename case in how to change a SharePoint site name safely.

For a tenant move, plan to remove old shortcuts and add them again once the new site is live. Sync trouble after a move is common, and my guide on OneDrive not syncing after migration shows how to fix it.

Moving OneDrive to another tenant

RecoveryTools OneDrive Migrator copies OneDrive accounts between tenants, with folders and version history. Sharing links, groups, outside guests, OneNote notebooks and sync app settings stay behind. A shortcut is a link and not a file, so list your shortcuts before the move and add them again after.

No credit card, no sign-up. Works on Windows 11, 10 and Windows Server 2022.

Which mistakes cost people files with shortcuts?

Four mistakes show up again and again when people try to remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive.

First, deleting files inside the shortcut and not the shortcut itself. Second, confirming a prompt that lists files. Third, removing a shortcut on the web and forgetting the old folder on the PC. Fourth, syncing a library and adding it as a shortcut at the same time, which causes the sync error and a lot of confusion.

If files did go missing, they are not in your local recycle bin. Restore them from the site recycle bin in SharePoint, which keeps versions safe.

My verdict on removing a SharePoint shortcut

To remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive, use the web and check the library. That is the full job in most cases.

Use File Explorer only when the web method leaves a stuck folder, and pause sync first. For a team, switch off the shortcut command or train people to use Remove and not Delete. A little care here saves a support ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing a SharePoint shortcut delete the files?

No. A shortcut is a link in My files. Removing it takes out the link and leaves the folder and files in SharePoint for everyone.

How do I remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive without deleting files?

To remove SharePoint shortcut from OneDrive, open OneDrive on the web, select My files, right-click the folder with the link icon and choose Remove. Then open the SharePoint library to confirm the files are still there.

Why can I not remove my SharePoint shortcut?

The usual causes are a sync mismatch, lost access to the library or a library that is both synced and added as a shortcut. Pause sync, remove the shortcut on the web and try again.

How do I recover files after I deleted a shortcut by mistake?

Deleting the shortcut alone does not delete files. If files were deleted, restore them from the SharePoint site recycle bin, not from your local recycle bin.

Can I stop users adding SharePoint shortcuts to OneDrive?

Yes. An admin can set DisableAddShortCutsToOneDrive to true in the SharePoint Online Management Shell. It applies to the entire tenant and does not remove shortcuts already added.

Can I sync a library and add a shortcut to it too?

No. Microsoft says you cannot use both Sync and Add shortcut to My files on the same document library. Choose one and remove the other.
